first project: a sign

...and we're off!  I finished my first project of the new year this weekend.
It's a simple, quick one but it turned out well (or at least I think it did).

Back in October, you may recall this post where we refreshed our front porch.
Part of the "refresh" included replacing a piece of wood on one of our columns.  That piece of wood was chippy and white but of course that doesn't look good on the front of the house but it might look good inside the house...so I kept it...and my husband gave me looks like I had lost my mind.

That little old piece of wood made a nice little sign to go in my kitchen.

Here's what we started with:

Here's what I did with it:

Here's the finished sign:

Pretty cute huh?

Hey Lori at IPOMP, just imagine if it said "Pickle"!

  1. I always think it is funny how we put junky bits on our walls and distress our furnitures so it looks worn and aged, but like our house to have fresh new paint - no chippiness allowed. Your sign looks great and good for you for being so resourceful.

  5. It IS cute!! Don't you just love the looks we get from our loved ones?! They are so clueless sometimes! LOL! I was just outside this weekend cleaning up the backyard a bit and there were some old, grungy, broken pieces of cedar fence boards that I threw in the garbage. As I was putting them in there I was thinking... you probably should save at LEAST one of these! I think I'll go dig one out and make a sign too! My boards aren't white, but I have paint!

  13. ABSOLUTELY adore this sign. Did you use a stencil? I really want to make a sign kind of like this for my kids new play room that says "read" or something like that to put above a large bookcase. Seriously, if totally pays off to save junk and remold it! Again, great job! love it.

  27. It's beautiful! How did you do it? I would love a sign for the outside of the house, but they cost upwards of 30 dollars! It would be so much better to make my own and save a bunch of money.
Hope you have a great day!
    Beth.
