Looking on the bright side

"Looking on the bright side" goes to a whole new level
when I see what's going on around here.
Here?  I mean Texas...and the record breaking heat.
We are on track to break the unbelievable heat records
set in the summer of 1980.

We have had 40 straight days of 100+ degree highs and no rain.
The last few days have averaged 107 degrees F.
The record is 42 days in a row of 100+ temperatures
and we'll pass that at the end of this week.

One local town ran out of water.  Yep, the whole town has no water.
Ponds have dried up and lakes are disappearing.

So, what's the bright side?
Well, according to the local paper, bugs don't like the heat either.
So, we have no mosquitos or fire ants which routinely ruin summers here.

Those searching for a silver lining to the nonstop burning heat need look no farther than the sky above or the ground below.
Mosquitoes are missing. Fire ants are hiding.
"There are no mosquitoes to speak of, and the fire ants are so deep underground they're not evident," said Rodney Beaman of Fort Worth Pest Control in Arlington

Now, contests are popping up.
Guess the date when we don't reach 100
or
guess the date when we finally have rain.

Welcome to Summer heat streak!
How does it work?
It's been one of the hottest summers on record in DFW. Think you know when it will end? Predict the day we'll snap the 100-degree streak at DFW Airport and win. If more than one contestant predicts the correct day, we'll use a random draw to choose a winner.
Are there prizes?
Yes! Winner gets bragging rights and four tickets to NRH20 in North Richland Hills

Needless to say, with this heat, I am behind on projects.
It's too hot to paint outside or in the garage
and even though the AC is on, you can
work up a quick sweat working inside the house.
I'll have a few new things to show you hopefully
in the next week or so.

  1. Yowsa. We lived in Dallas (actually Plano) back in '93-'94. I was preggers with no. 4 and I remember we had 30 days of over 100 with no rain. I remember loathing the day I complained about northern Indiana's humidity. It was after that summer we decided to move back north. I simply wimped out on Texas' heat (and the tornadoes from which one couldn't hide in a basement like we do here in Indiana.)

Oh, and I don't miss the fire ants or the termites. We've got all yer mosquitoes up here this summer :)

  2. I love the no mosquitoes! But it is so hot outside, you can't enjoy them not being there, 'cause it is too hot outside. Did I mention it is too hot outside?

  3. Just had to say hey neighbor. I recently came across your blog and to my surprise, discovered that I live in your neighborhood and actually have the same floor plan as you. Lone Star Antiques is also a favorite place of mine to shop. It's a small world!

  4. So glad I found your blog this morning while having coffee-
I am a South Texas blogger and a new follower.
I know exactly what you mean about the heat.
It is almost hard to describe, isn't it?

    Enjoyed visiting,

  5. That's hot! We have had an unusual heat wave and lack of rain here until this week, but nothing like that. This week we have had lots of rain and cooler temps (20-23 C) and it is a nice break. Hoping some rain and break from the heat is headed Texas' way soon.

  6. That would NOT make me a happy camper. I hope the heat wave breaks for you soon. Hang in there!

  7. I'm sorry girl-- I complain about our winters but our cold weather certainly calmed down our summer. 'Cept for the last few days. Whew.

  8. I'm reading this a little late so I hope by now the heat streak has been broken! We had a few days of that kind of heat and it is miserable! Too hot to do anything outside.
    Try and stay cool.

  9. Apparantly your mosquitoes decided to migrate north to triple our normally horrible mosquito population! I hope you have some relief from the heat and are experiencing a shower or two soon. t. xoxoxoox
